JTA is committed to helping our customers prepare for hurricanes and other severe weather. The information below has been prepared to help you understand what JTA services are available to you and your family in the event of severe weather or a city-ordered evacuation due to a hurricane emergency. Understanding the evacuation services that will be available will help you PLAN NOW for the best option for you and your family members.

Service Changes during Severe Weather

Service changes and the temporary shutdown of JTA transportation services are typically triggered by sustained wind speeds. Jacksonville bridges are closed when winds reach sustained speeds of 40 mph for at least one minute, measured at the top of the bridge.

The JTA will suspend service when sustained winds reach 35 mph in order to allow all vehicles to make it back to our operations campuses safely and give customers ample time to exit those vehicles.

Without a service suspension, certain routes may be detoured for any hazards such as downed power lines or standing water.

Service Changes during an Evacuation

In the event that severe weather is impacting our service territory and an evacuation is mandated from the City of Jacksonville, the following changes will take effect:

  • Fares will be suspended for evacuation routes.
  • JTA will operate a Sunday schedule for normal routes.
  • All bus and First Coast Flyer stops will become evacuation pick-up points to transport individuals to JTA transit hubs.
  • Buses will transport citizens from pickup points directly to designated shelters as directed by Jacksonville's Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Evacuation Options

If an evacuation order is issued for your neighborhood and you cannot leave the area, JTA will provide free transportation to open public shelters only. During an evacuation order and depending on where you live in Jacksonville, there are two ways to use JTA services:

You will be transported to a transfer hub where you will change buses to be transported to a public shelter.

If You Have Special Needs

When an evacuation order is issued, JTA will provide transportation for residents with special needs to a designated shelter.

Pre-registration with the city is required every year for special needs evacuation. Registration DOES NOT carry over from year to year.


Please call the City of Jacksonville Division of Emergency Preparedness at (904) 630-3758 or visit the Special Medical Needs Registration webpage. Once registered, JTA can transport customers to designated special needs public shelters.

Key Points to Know

  • Please be patient. Transport and transfer during a hurricane evacuation may take several hours.
  • Private vehicles with family and friends are always the quickest and easiest alternative for evacuating.
  • In an emergency, customers using JTA public transportation cannot choose their shelter destination.
  • JTA will only transport Emergency Operations Center designated household pets. Only the following household pets are allowed at shelters: dogs, cats, rodents (such as hamsters, gerbils, etc.) birds and rabbits. No reptiles are allowed at shelters. Animals must be cared for by their owners when in pet-friendly shelters. For more information, please contact the City of Jacksonville at (904) 630-CITY.

NOTE: JTA must discontinue all regular and evacuation services at an announced cutoff time (determined by city emergency officials) to ensure residents and employees are in a safe location before hurricane effects are expected. This includes all modes of transportation.

In Summary

Please remember, it is BEST to make plans ahead of time and stay with friends or family members outside of the evacuation zone.

Public shelters are available as a last resort for any residents.

During an evacuation order, public shelters will be announced and opened by city emergency officials only.
