JTAMobilityWorks Project along 5th Street Begins

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Work on the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA)’s next JTAMobilityWorks project along McDuff Avenue and 5th Street commenced this week in West Jacksonville.

This project is located in Jacksonville City Council District 9 and will include the reconstruction of a half-mile section of existing roadway on 5th Street between Melson Avenue and Huron Street. The scope includes reconfiguring the section into a three-lane road with new turn lanes, bicycle lanes in each direction, proper curbing and new street lighting, along with drainage, water and sewer improvements.

“We are driven to improve our community through these JTAMobilityWorks projects, especially in busy corridors like 5th Street,” said JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “Our projects create complete streets, giving equal attention to pedestrians, cyclists, JTA bus passengers and drivers.”

The approximately $4 million project is funded through the proceeds JTA receives through the Local Option Gas Tax (LOGT) as part of the JTAMobilityWorks program.

Maer Construction Inc. was awarded the contract in March after submitting the lowest bid through a solicitation issued January 14, 2020.

Completion is expected by summer 2022.

A detour for JTA Route 32“McDuff” – is now in effect for the area until further notice. Missed bus stops include stops #3477 and #3478 along Detroit Street, stop #4188 along Melson Avenue and stop #5177 along 5th Street.
