JTA Plans to Test a Downtown Night Trolley

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – July 25, 2014 – The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), in cooperation with downtown businesses, will conduct a two-night trolley trial August 1 and 2 in downtown from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The trial will test the viability of a potential Downtown Night Trolley.  Riders can catch the Downtown Trolley on Margaret Street where the route connects with the Riverside-Avondale Night Trolley.  The trolley will stop at the Jacksonville Landing and the entertainment district called The Elbow.  The Downtown Loop includes Riverside Avenue between Margaret Street and Water Street, and portions of Water, Pearl, East Adams, North Liberty and East Forsyth Streets.

“Several businesses in the Landing and The Elbow approached JTA about creating a downtown route,” said Brad Thoburn, Vice President of Long Range Planning and System Development.  “This weekend service trial is a partnership between JTA and downtown businesses.”

“We are excited to partner with The Elbow to offer safe and convenient transportation services for the downtown nighttime crowd,” said JTA CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “I share the organization’s passion for improving the transportation and parking solutions for the downtown entertainment district.”

The Downtown Night Trolley will operate Friday and Saturday, from 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. and connect with the Riverside Night Trolley in Five Points on Margaret Street.

Operating every 15 minutes, the Trolley can take you to eat, shop and enjoy the nightlife in downtown.    Unlimited-ride, single-day passes can be purchased in advance for $4 at selected locations.  A single ride can be purchased for $1.50 with exact change on the trolley.  Seniors 60 and older have complimentary access.  Credit cards will not be accepted on the trolley.
