BRT Project Information

Part of the planning and implementation of a BRT system requires undergoing a series of projects that follow the guidelines of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), to secure federal government funding. These projects will examine potential impacts along the proposed alignment alternatives and help the project team determine the best system alternative to run within the proposed corridors.

Currently, the BRT project team is conducting a Phase One Downtown Environmental Assessment project and system wide Tier One Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement project. View the project links to learn more.

Phase One Downtown Environmental Assessment and Preliminary Design Project

The Phase One Downtown Environmental Assessment and Preliminary Design Project will be the first step in the development of the regional BRT system.  The Phase One project will examine the proposed downtown corridor alignments for environmental, construction and parking related impacts, as well as, potential transit stop locations. Phase One project improvements will reduce the number of roadways that buses use in the downtown, provide more frequent reliable service to the Downtown and through the system. The Downtown system is expected to be in full operation by Fall 2010. We encourage you to view the project information and frequently asked questions (FAQ's).

What's New

Jacksonville Transportation Authority is pleased to announce that federal funding in the amount of $9.3 million has been budgeted for the Downtown Bus Rapid Transit project. This funding will provide for the construction of rush hour dedicated bus lanes on Broad and Jefferson streets, additional pedestrian amenities and enhanced bus super stops (which are regular stop stations that feature lighting, real time information and nice landscaping).

The project will help remove buses from the core of Downtown streets, consolidate routes while providing more frequent service to passengers.

Tier One Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS)

The Tier One Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) project will examine the four proposed BRT corridor alignments and the potential transit stop locations for possible community and environmental impacts. During the project, various public involvement opportunities will be provided and JTA, with FTA approval in fall 2007, will begin purchasing needed right-of-way and properties from willing sellers only. We encourage you to visit the project information and frequently asked questions (FAQ's).

What's New

After completing the review of the Tier One Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement, The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has granted the Jacksonville Transportation Authority the Record of Decision (ROD), to begin Purchasing right-of-way for future Bus Rapid Transit station locations, read more.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority has completed preparation of the Tier One Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement, read more.

Tier One Project FAQ's

Station Maps with highlighted parcels of interest

In conducting the Tier One PEIS, the JTA identified parcels of interest that could be useful in the development of planned BRT station locations. These parcels are considered of interest because they are located in activity centers for transit service. The entire parcel is shown on the maps even if JTA is only interested in a portion of the property to gain environmental clearance from the Federal Transit Administration.
