JTA is researching all modes of transportation and evaluating their success in our region. Transportation modes include waterborne, street car, commuter rail, light rail and bus rapid transit. You might ask, "Why all the studies, why not just do it?" Initial studies must be completed to determine first if the project should even move forward. Once it is determined there is a demand, JTA must evaluate feasible locations and costs to construct, operate and maintain the specific mode, in addition to environmental costs and benefits. These all must be considered as well as any other issues which may impact the success of the project. If it is determined the project is feasible and funding is available, design and construction can follow. Some projects never make it out of the study phase. Many undergo substantial changes from the beginning of the study to the end of the study. It all goes back to having the right information to make the right decisions.
JTA will continue to think toward the future to ensure mobility options are adequate for the success of our region as a place to work, to live and to thrive. This will be done through a combination of roadway improvements and multiple transit options. We will deliver choices for you, the taxpayer. We continue to pledge to utilize your funds to make changes that will benefit you. We have done it in the past, we are doing it today and we will do it in the future. WE ARE JTA!
While controlling costs, JTA is also working to be more eco-friendly. We have changed 108 lighting fixtures, and replaced old, non functioning air conditioning and heating systems in our office buildings to be more energy efficient. Roof repairs to facilities have utilized eco-friendly materials. Ultra low sulfur diesel is being tested in the fleet. In the coming year we are adding a recycling effort, improved electrical services, solar lighting and green cleaning products. The future holds flex-fuel transit vehicles and solar-powered transit shelters.
