National Magazine Honors JTA for Transit Innovation

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has been named a winner of METRO magazine and BusCon’s inaugural Innovative Solutions Awards. JTA is one of four transit agencies selected for the prestigious award from organizations across the county. The agencies were honored for implementing new initiatives that help them save money, run more efficiently, streamline operations, improve customer satisfaction and safety, or increase ridership. Carl Weckenmann, JTA’s Senior Manager of System Planning, picked up the award at the 2015 BusCon in Indianapolis on September 30.

JTA was chosen for the Route Optimization Initiative (ROI) which redesigned its 30-year old route structure to make transit more appealing to current and potential riders. Without increasing annual operating costs, the JTA was able to add extended weekend service, improve frequencies on busy corridors and increase service hours.

“We are honored to be recognized by METRO and BusCon for our long-term vision to transform transportation in Jacksonville,” said JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “ROI was innovative in its unprecedented quick and thorough level of planning, outreach and education.”

Transit agencies from around the country have visited JTA to hear firsthand how it was accomplished and benchmark best practices.
