JTA Celebrates National Transportation Week May 15–21

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority will celebrate National Transportation Week May 15 – 21 with a host of events and activities.

The celebration begins on Monday, May 16 with Rider Appreciation Day.  From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., riders will receive snacks and surprises as well as information on new JTA programs at the Rosa Parks Transit Station.  JTA team members will pass out comment cards and speak directly with riders about how we can improve our services.  Southpaw, the Jacksonville Suns mascot, will also be on hand to greet riders and pass out Suns baseball schedules.

May 16 also kicks off our Dump The Pump citizen education campaign.  From May 16 to June 16, we will collect electronic pledges to Dump The Pump.  The education campaign outlines the benefits of using mass transit and includes an interactive website with a video, a commuter calculator showing how much money is spent monthly and annually on fuel, as well as a gas gauge to track the number of pledges we receive.  As we reach certain milestones in the number of pledges, drawings for free bus passes will take place.  Finally, we will collect feedback from those who pledge regarding their experiences when they dumped the pump on June 16.

The celebration continues on Thursday, May 19 during JTA Night at the Ballpark, where the Jacksonville Suns will take on the Birmingham Barons.  JTA Board Chairman Michael Cavendish will throw the first pitch at 7:05 p.m.  The hours for the FREE Bay Street Trolley will be extended to 10:30 p.m., and baseball fans can tour one of JTA's replica trolleys in front of the Baseball Grounds the night of the game.

National Transportation Week has been celebrated across the United States since 1962.  Join JTA as we celebrate the importance of transportation and the Americans who work to meet our transportation needs every day.
