JTA Approves Contract with C&D Construction to
Rehabilitate St. Johns River Ferry Landings

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – June 5, 2015 – The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) Board of Directors approved a contract not to exceed $4.5 million to C&D Construction, Inc. to complete the St. Johns River Ferry Fender Rehabilitation Project.

The St. Johns River Ferry runs every day between Mayport and Ft. George Island across the St. Johns River. The existing slip walls and fender pile boxes on both sides of the river are over fifty (50) years old and in need of repair. In addition, the existing slipway bulkheads on both sides of the river are damaged and are reaching the end of their useful life. This project rehabilitates the existing ferry slip walls, fenders, walkways and bulkheads which comprise both the Mayport and Fort George landings for the St. John’s River Ferry.

“This is a positive for the entire community,” said JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “The St. Johns River Ferry is an iconic landmark in Northeast Florida. JTA is pleased to be able to ensure it remains an integral part of the East Coast Greenway, a trail connecting cities from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida.”

Construction will begin in December 2015 to coincide with the scheduled ferry haul out while the boat is out of service. The work is anticipated to be completed by April 2016.
